From adversity to triumph: Türkiye's economic resilience and adaptation strategies amidst disasters
Sakarya University, Turkey
Abstract. This study investigates the macroeconomic impacts of disasters in Türkiye from 1999 to 2023 using ARDL and Impulse Response Functions. Findings reveal that disaster-induced economic losses significantly reduce GDP per capita in both the short and long run. However, a rise in disaster victims appears to stimulate growth due to reconstruction and aid flows. Capital accumulation drives growth, while ODA has a temporary negative effect. Insurance and financial services consistently hamper growth, suggesting weak risk-transfer mechanisms. The study advocates strengthened financial resilience, increased recovery spending, and enhanced international cooperation to mitigate disaster risks and promote sustainable economic stability.
