The economic value of data. From data to decisions in the public sector
National University of Political Studies and Public Administration, Romania
Abstract. This paper explores the economic value of data in the public sector and its role in optimizing decision-making. With the emergence of big data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning techniques that can leverage data to provide multiple benefits in forecasting certain phenomena, thus leading to better decision-making, data has become a national asset. Considering that a decision must, first and foremost, be informed—based on the analysis of all options, scenarios, and alternatives—data proves to be an essential resource in the process of optimizing decisions. Thus, data-driven public administration revolutionizes decision-making processes by integrating data analytics and evidence-based approaches to enhance governance and service delivery. By examining frameworks for data governance, open data initiatives, and the value of data as a strategic asset, the study highlights how data-driven decision-making improves transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency.
Keywords: data-driven decision-making, public administration, data-driven public sector, data governance, optimization.
